2015 Subaru WRX

New for 2015

The 2015 Subaru WRX is an entirely new and redesigned model.

Improving a Masterpiece

It’s easy to redesign a car that had flopped, but re-imagining a hit can be a bit more challenging. That’s the position Subaru was in when it came time to launch the 2015 WRX, the latest version of a compact performance car that’s become a favorite among car fans after over a decade on the U.S. market.

Subaru appears to have pulled it off, keeping the hardware that makes a WRX a WRX, but updating everything for added refinement, efficiency, and drivability. So while the previous WRX was able to attract legions of fans, the new model looks poised to broaden its appeal and bring the gospel of driving fun to a whole new audience.

Powertrain and Performance

The 2015 Subaru WRX is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which produces 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It features the same “boxer” configuration as all other Subaru engines, and improvements promise to increase the WRX’s drivability and efficiency.

The new engine is paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or a first-ever Sport Lineartronic CVT automatic, which includes six-speed and eight-speed manual shifting modes.

As with nearly every Subaru, all-wheel drive is standard. In fact, there are two systems, one for each transmission. There’s also a new Active Torque Vectoring system, which can apportion the power sent to individual wheels for improved handling, and plectric power assisted steering.

While the WRX’s true mission is driving fun, its compact size and small engine make for decent fuel economy as well. The EPA rates the 2015 WRX at 24 mpg combined (21 city/28 highway)* with the manual transmission, and 21 mpg combined (19 city/25 highway) with the CVT.*

Features and Trims

The 2015 Subaru WRX is only available as a four-door, five-seat compact sedan, and comes in three trim levels: base, Premium, and Limited.

While it doesn’t have a fancy name, the base model is fairly well equipped. Standard equipment includes 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, 60/40 split-fold rear seatback, a flat-bottomed steering wheel with Bluetooth, audio, and cruise control switches, and 4.3-inch LCD display nestled between the gauges, and a rear-view camera.

The Premium trim level adds fog lights, an SI-Drive control system that allows the driver to adjust different vehicle parameters, and a trunk-lid spoiler. In addition, buyers can specify the Sport Lineartronic CVT and a navigation system.

Those two options are also available on the top WRX Limited (along with keyless start), which includes an eight-way power driver’s seat and LED low-beam headlights as standard equipment.

Exterior/Interior

The 2015 Subaru WRX may have entirely new exterior styling, but it should still look somewhat familiar. That’s because the WRX is again based on the Impreza, which was redesigned for the 2013 model year.

To give the WRX the proper amount of aggression, Subaru added flared fenders, an aluminum hood with scoop, and those 17-inch wheels. The results are stunning: The WRX looks like a rally car, even while moored in an underground parking garage.

The interior is simple and functional. Sporty touches include the aforementioned flat-bottomed steering wheel, and heavily-bolstered front seats to keep driver and passenger in place under hard cornering.

It’s also roomier than the 2014 model’s, thanks to the new Impreza platform’s larger dimensions. That means two extra inches of rear-seat legroom, and 12 inches of trunk space.

Safety

All of that performance and practicality comes with a measure of safety as well. Standard safety equipment includes antilock brakes, stability and traction control, as well as front, side-torso, side-curtain, and driver’s side-knee airbags. All of this helped the 2015 WRX earn a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Bottom Line

Many performance cars sacrifice practicality, fuel economy, or refinement in the pursuit of quick acceleration and righteous handling, but that’s not the case with the 2015 Subaru WRX.

The aggressively-styled exterior is backed up by some serious performance hardware that makes this turbocharged pocket rocket a joy to fling around your favorite backroad. Yet when the blood isn’t boiling, the WRX is still a relatively spacious four-door sedan with a trunk and a fairly-efficient four-cylinder engine. And while the all-wheel drive drivetrain provides plenty of traction during hard cornering, it also helps keep the WRX pointing in the right direction when there’s rain or snow on the road.

That combination of features, combined with an agreeable $26,295 MSRP,** makes the WRX a fast, fun car that can be driven (and enjoyed) every day. Contact us or stop by Herb Gordon Subaru today for a test drive.
