2016 Subaru Forester

New for 2016

The Subaru Forester returns for the 2016 model year sporting a number of new features. Base 2.5i models receive a new 6.2-inch Starlink touchscreen display audio with single-touch gesture control. Meanwhile, Premium, Limited, and Touring trims recieve a large 7-inch touchscreen with multiple-gesture display and the Safety and Security packge, while EyeSight®-equipped models benefit from steering-responsive foglights.

The People Pleaser

They say you can’t please everybody, but the 2016 Subaru Forester doesn’t put much stock in that saying. The fuel-efficient compact SUV is safe, reliable, and affordable. It’s pretty darn capable too, thanks to standard all-wheel drive and Subaru’s penchant for quality. Its host of advanced (and award-winning) safety features make it a family-friendly choice, too. Is the 2016 Subaru Forester the perfect crossover? It sure looks that way.

Let’s delve a little deeper and find out.

Powertrains and Performance

The majority of 2016 Subaru Forester models are equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. Power is shuffled to all four wheels via a standard six-speed manual transmission. As mentioned before, AWD is standard on all Forester models.

Of course, if you’d like to forgo the physical exertion of shifting gears yourself, an optional continuously variably transmission (CVT) is on hand to offer its own blend of power and efficiency.

Speaking of efficiency, the Forester was designed with mileage on the mind. As such, it returns some very impressive fuel economy numbers. EPA estimates for 2.5 models equipped with the manual earn 25 mpg combined (22 city/29 highway),* while CVT-equipped models return an impressive 27 mpg combined (24 city/32 highway).* Both models offer excellent fuel economy, but the CVT deserves special praise for producing such large numbers, especially when taking the Forester's standard all-wheel drive configuration into account.

If it’s increased performance you desire then the 2016 Forester is happy to oblige. In addition to the peppy 2.5-liter, the Forester is available with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, which churns out 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Turbocharged models are only available with the CVT and serve up some additional zest to what is an already compelling crossover.

But the turbocharged Forester is designed to do more than tickle your toes. It’s also incredibly easy on your bank account, achieving some lofty fuel efficiency numbers of its own. EPA estimates award the 2.0 turbo 25 mpg combined (23 city/28 highway).*

Regardless of powertrain, though, the 2016 Subaru Forester–in any guise–is more than capable of tackling tough terrain. Standard AWD keeps this crossover from losing its balance, and a number of trims offer additional driver-selectable modes to ensure optimal stabilization and improved traction on slippery surfaces.

Features and Trims

The 2016 Subaru Forester is a compact crossover that starts at $22,395.** It’s available in 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 2.5i Touring, 2.0XT Premium, and 2.0XT Touring trims levels, which largely coincide with what powertrain can be found humming under the hood. Again, all models come with stadard all-wheel drive.

As with any Subaru model, the Forester offers a wealth of standard features that are sure to please drivers. Highlights include full power accessories, cruise control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a color multifunction display, and rearview camera. While tech highlights include a 6.2-inch touchscreen with Starlink™ tech interface, Bluetooth® audio and phone connectivity, CD player, and USB/iPod support.

Stepping up to the 2.5i Premium adds amenities such as a panoramic sunroof, a 10-way power driver seat (with power lumbar adjustments), rear armrest with cupholder, and reclining rear seatbacks. The 2.5i Premium adds a larger 7-inch touchscreen and replaces the standard Forester’s four-speaker sound system with an upgraded six-speaker system, complete with HD Radio™.

Move up to the 2.5i Limited trim and along with the All-Weather package drivers get automatic headlights, foglights, and automatic climate control, among other creature comforts such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather upholstery, and an upgraded instrument cluster.

Traveling further up the list, the 2.5i Touring throws in a premium eight-speaker harmon/kardon® sound system and other premium content such as keyless ignition/entry and a rather nifty one-touch folding rear seatback.

Finally, 2.0XT models add an additional layer of sportiness and comfort with an upgraded turbocharged engine, CVT transmission, alloy pedals, and more.

Design

Despite having grown in size over the years, the 2016 Forester sports Subaru's unique and off-beat styling. It's still a compact crossover for sure, but the Forester is now taller, featuring a more aggressive design than ever before. That certainly fits with the vehicle's confident character, and one we happen to enjoy. In truth, the Forester sports a rather timeless look, one you won't get sick of looking at five years down the line.

Inside, the 2016 Subaru Forester features a spacious and inviting cabin. The seats are supportive without being overly firm, and all the controls are well-defined and within comfortable reach. Material quality is another high note, offering solid, soft-to-touch materials that would be just as easily at home in a luxury crossover. Even those seated in back will be comfortable for hours, with ample head and leg room.

And when it’s time to trade in passengers for cargo, the Forester is happy to do its part, offering up a massive cargo hold that affords owners 74.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.

Safety

Safety has always been a strong suit for Subaru models and the 2016 Forester carries on that tradition. In addition to standard features such as antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, a driver knee airbag, and a rearview camera, the Forester is available with Subaru’s cutting-edge and award-winning EyeSight® driver assist technology.

EyeSight® is an excellent supplement to the Forester’s impressive suite of safety features. It automatically monitors traffic movement, optimizes cruise control, and warns you when you're swaying outside your lane. It can even help slow down the car in the event of an impending collision.

Bottom Line

The 2016 Subaru Forester is a supremely impressive crossover. It offers the right balance of comfort and confidence regardless of whether you’re zipping across town or venturing off the beaten path. Simply put, the Forester is determined to get you where you need to go with minimal effort.
