Overview

Subaru has always led by example—one of the many reasons consumers have become endeared with the brand over the years. There’s something to be said about an automaker insisting on marching to the beat of its own drum.

The 2017 Crosstrek is a prime example of that philosophy. Based on the popular and capable Impreza, the Crosstrek has the profile of a small, sporty hatchback, but with an extra touch of ruggedness and Subaru’s world-class all-wheel drive thrown in for good measure. Sure it’s “different,” but in a good way.

The Crosstrek is a small crossover available in four trim levels: 2.0i, 2.0i Premium, the new-for-2017 2.0i Premium Special Edition, and 2.0i Limited. Available in Crystal Black Silica or Pure Red, the new Special Edition includes new driver assistance technologies and ambient cabin lighting to take your drive to the next level.

The Perfect Ride for…

Outdoor enthusiasts or drivers in cold-weather climates who want a capable all-weather vehicle that’s not a truck or SUV. The Crosstrek performs admirably in all conditions with off-road-ready suspension and ground clearance and Subaru’s standard all-wheel drive. Plus, there’s plenty of room for shuttling your gear or the gang with 97.5 cu. ft. of passenger volume or up to 51.9 cu. ft. of cargo volume with the rear seat lowered.

Drive & Handling

The Crosstrek’s gasoline powertrain consists of a 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder that produces 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. This engine is mated to a standard five-speed manual transmission on the lowest trim level and replaced by a CVT in all others.

While AWD is standard across the board, it’s worth noting that the CVT model’s AWD system is programmed to allocate more power to the front wheels while directing power rearward when front traction is compromised. This doesn’t compromise performance; rather it allows the Crosstrek to operate more intelligently.

The Crosstrek handles well both on and off the pavement. The vehicle’s increased ride height make short work of dirt trails and snowy streets, while the cleverly tuned suspension keeps things comfortable around town and on the highway.

Despite its adventure-seeking nature, the Crosstrek doesn’t abandon common sense when it comes to fuel economy. Drivers enjoy 29 mpg combined (26 city/34 highway) with the CVT, while the manual earns an EPA-estimated 26 mpg combined (23/31).*

Key Features

EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology

The available EyeSight technology suite adds peace of mind by preparing for the unexpected. The system will monitor the movement of other drivers, adjust cruise control, and alert you when you start to drift outside of the lane. EyeSight also includes Pre-Collision Braking, which can apply full braking force in select situations to avoid or minimize the effects of a frontal collision.

SUBARU STARLINK™ Multimedia

Whether you’re catching up with loved ones or following breaking news, staying connected these days is essential. SUBARU STARLINK makes it convenient and safe to do so with access to a wide range of STARLINK apps, integrated Pandora® radio, and Bluetooth® audio connectivity for your Android and iOS devices. The 6.2-inch display comes standard—you can opt to upgrade to a 7-inch display with Siri® Eyes-Free functionality and add voice-added navigation.

Alternative Options

The Impreza offers the style and capability of the Crosstrek without the focus on off-road performance, making it a fine choice for city drivers. If you’re looking for additional passenger and cargo volume, the dependable Forester remains a popular choice and offers new driver assist features, a torque-vectoring all-wheel drive system for turbocharged models, and more comfort and convenience features for 2017.
