What's New?

The Outback receives a number of upgrades for 2018, improving everything from aesthetics to drive experience to safety. The most significant changes include a more rugged front end; new available Steering Responsive Headlights (SRH), which aim the lights as the driver turns; High Beam Assist, which turn high beams off and on automatically as traffic conditions vary; retuned suspension dampeners for a smoother ride; and a host of upgrades to reduce road and wind noise.

In other words, the Outback is officially better than ever.

Overview

We’re all familiar with Subaru’s iconic tagline, “Love. It’s what makes Subaru, a Subaru.” Well, the automaker certainly put special care into the 2018 Outback because there’s a whole lot to love.

Crossovers are all the rage now, but some companies have more experience with them than others. Subaru started out selling all-wheel-drive sedans and wagons as alternatives to gas-guzzling SUVs and introduced the original Outback more than 20 years ago. While other carmakers are just now entering the segment, Subaru has decades of experience to pour into the 2018 Outback.

The 2018 Outback is available in six trim levels starting at $25,895.*

The Perfect Ride for…

Drivers seeking a wagon that's as adventurous as they are. Thanks to a respectable fuel efficiency of up to 35 mpg on the highway,** an interior cargo volume of 73.3 cubic feet, standard crossbars, and Subaru's famous Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) and Active Torque Vectoring, the 2018 Outback is the perfect vehicle to take you anywhere you want to go (and haul anything you'll need once you arrive). Whether you need to bring the kayaks to the river, your tent to the mountains, or just your friends to the beach, the Outback more than delivers.

Drive & Handling

The 2018 Outback sticks to the same reliable Subaru formula of standard all-wheel drive and boxed-four engines paired with a Lineartronic® CVT (continuously variable transmission).

Base models come equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, one that produces 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. Those looking to kick things up a notch can opt for the DOHC 3.6-liter 6-cylinder BOXER engine, which is good for 256 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque.

Thanks to standard features like Symmetrical AWD, Active Torque Vectoring (which shunts power side to side to help turn the car into corners), an 8.7-inch ground clearance, and X-Mode traction assist (which helps the driver to maintain a constant speed downhill through engine braking), the Outback is more than equipped to handle whatever life chooses to throw in its path.

Key Features

Subaru STARLINK™ Multimedia

STARLINK™ Multimedia, which comes standard on all Outback models, connects you to music, news, navigation, podcasts, weather and more. Wireless pairing capability and hands-free smartphone operation allow you to safely access your favorite content through Pandora®, SiriusXM® Satellite radio, Aha™, and a host of new and fun STARLINK™ apps, not to mention Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™.

STARLINK™ Safety and Security

Available on all Outback models, this safety system comes with Automatic Collision Notification; SOS Emergency Assistance; Enhanced Roadside Assistance; Stolen Vehicle Recovery; and diagnostic, security, and remote services functions. Paired with the STARLINK™ tech features, you’ll be good to go wherever your heart desires.

Alternative Options

If you appreciate the cargo space and capability of the Outback but are looking for something a little smaller, the Forester may be for you. It’s just as capable off-road as it is on city streets, and it starts at only $22,795.* Another option would be the Crosstrek, which starts at $21,795.* The Crosstrek shares the same chassis as the Forester, but it looks sportier and is a great option for singles or couples.
