2015 Subaru Forester

New for 2015

The Subaru Forester received the bulk of its updates last year, but returns for 2015 with a now standard rearview camera on all models and larger 18-inch wheels on 2.5i Touring models.

The People’s Choice

The Subaru Forester has garnered quite the following over the years, thanks to solid performance, ample interior space and, of course, Subaru’s famous symmetrical all-wheel drive system, which is standard on all models. In fact, few car models possess such a loyal and ardent following—especially for a traditionally smaller automaker such as Subaru. So it goes without saying that, in the Forester, Subaru has a resounding hit on its hands.

For 2015, the Forester is even better than before. Not only are drivers afforded a mix of engine types and trims designed to suit virtually any lifestyle, but the Forester is a remarkably safe vehicle, earning near-perfect crash test scores and a bevy of available driver assistance technologies.

Powertrains and Performance

The Forester is available in a number of flavors, but before we delve into that, let’s examine the engine options on hand. The majority of Forester models are equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. Power is shuffled to all four wheels via a standard six-speed manual transmission. As mentioned before, AWD is standard on all Forester models.

Of course, if you’d like to forgo the physical exertion of shifting gears yourself, an optional continuously variably transmission (CVT) is on hand to offer its own blend of power and efficiency.

Speaking of efficiency, the Forester was designed with mileage on the mind. As such, it returns some very impressive fuel economy numbers. EPA estimates for 2.5 models equipped with the manual earn 24 mpg combined (22 city/29 highway),* while CVT-equipped models kick it up a gear (pun thoroughly intended) and earn 27 mpg combined (24 city/32 highway).* Both models offer excellent fuel economy, but the CVT deserves special praise for mining such large numbers given the Forester’s all-wheel drive makeup.

If it’s increased performance you desire then the 2015 Forester is happy to oblige. In addition to the pleasant and pliant 2.5-liter, the Forester is available with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, which churns out 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Turbocharged models are only available with the CVT and serve up some additional zest to what is an already compelling crossover.

But the turbocharged Forester is designed to do more than tickle your toes. It’s also incredibly easy on your funds, achieving some lofty fuel efficiency numbers of its own. EPA estimates award the 2.0 turbo 25 mpg combined (23 city/28 highway).*

Regardless of powertrain, though, the 2015 Subaru Forester–in any guise–is more than capable of tackling tough terrain. Standard AWD keeps this crossover from losing its balance, and a number of trims offer additional driver-selectable modes to ensure optimal stabilization and improved traction on slippery surfaces.

Features and Trims

The 2015 Subaru Forester is a compact crossover SUV that starts at $22,195.** It’s available in 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 2.5i Touring, 2.0XT Premium, and 2.0XT Touring trims levels, which largely coincide with what powertrain can be found humming on the hood.

As with any Subaru model, the Forest offers a wealth of standard features that are sure to please drivers. Highlights include full power accessories, cruise control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a color multifunction display, and rearview camera. While tech highlights include Bluetooth® audio and phone connectivity, CD player, and USB/iPod support.

Stepping up to the 2.5i Premium adds amenities such as a panoramic sunroof, a 10-way power driver seat (with power lumbar adjustments), rear armrest with cupholder, and reclining rear seatbacks. The 2.5i also replaces the standard Forester’s four-speaker sound system with an upgraded six-speaker system, complete with HD radio.

Drivers looking to drive home a 2.5i Premium may want to serious contemplate their transmission choice, as 2.5i Premium models mated to the manual receive an All-Weather package gratis, which includes heated side mirrors and heated front seats, while CVT owners must select is at additional cost.

Move up to the 2.5i Limited trim and along with the All-Weather package drivers get automatic headlights, foglights, and automatic climate control, among other creature comforts such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather upholstery, and an upgraded instrument cluster.

Traveling further up the list, the 2.5i Touring throws in a premium eight-speaker harmon/kardon® sound system and other premium content such as keyless ignition/entry and a rather nifty one-touch folding rear seatback.

Finally, 2.0XT models add an additional layer of sportiness and comfort with an upgraded turbocharged engine, CVT transmission, alloy pedals, and more.

Exterior/Interior

The Forester has grown slightly over the years, and sports a somewhat higher and more aggressive nose on the outside. And while Subaru has added a dose of dynamism to its overall look, a loud and obnoxious design language this is not. Instead, the 2015 Forester sports a classic and refined look, one that is sure to please buyers today as it will five years from now. Timelessness is the hallmark of good automotive design and the Forester is among this rare breed.

Inside, the seats are supportive without being overly firm, and all the controls are, as with previous models, clear and within easy reach of the driver. Material quality is another high note, offering solid, soft-to-touch material quality that would be just as easily at home in a luxury crossover. Even those seated in back will be comfortable for hours, with ample head and foot room.

And when it’s time to trade in passengers for cargo, the Forester is happy to do its part, offering up a massive cargo hold that affords owners 74.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.

Safety

Safety has always been a strong suit for Subaru models and the 2015 Forester carries on that tradition. In addition to standard features such as antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, a driver knee airbag, and a rearview camera, the Forester is available with Subaru’s cutting-edge EyeSight® driver assist technology.

EyeSight is an excellent supplement to the Forester’s impressive suite of safety features. It automatically monitors traffic movement, optimizes cruise control, and warns you when you're swaying outside your lane. It can even help slow down the car when danger in the event of an impending collision.

Bottom Line

Whether you’re zipping around town or venturing across more treacherous terrain, the Forester is determined to get you where you need to go in supreme comfort and safety.
