2022 Subaru Outback

Overview

The 2022 Subaru Outback keeps giving fans what they want most – a rugged wagon that handles most of life’s adventures with remarkable ease. In typical Subaru fashion, the Outback mimics larger and more rugged SUVs with its beefy body cladding and ample ground clearance. However, buyers will appreciate the Outback’s car-like trappings. Genuine Nappa leather upholstery, heated front, and rear seats, a hands-free power liftgate, and dual-zone automatic climate control are some of the niceties that come available on the Outback.

The Perfect Ride For…

Outdoorsy types with a hankering for a capable yet practical vehicle. With up to 9.5 inches of ground clearance and the marque’s famous symmetrical all-wheel drive system, the 2022 Subaru Outback more than holds its own on off-road trails. Properly-equipped models can also tow up to 3,500 pounds, making the Outback an ideal tow vehicle for a modest camper. An available 11.6-inch high-resolution touch screen display makes wirelessly pairing your smartphone, getting navigation directions, and choosing entertainment options much easier.

Drive and Handling

The 2022 Outback gets its motivation from the marque’s famous Boxer flat 4-cylinder engine. A 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated version with 182 horsepower on tap comes standard on most trim levels. If you want considerably more power, then stepping up to Onyx Edition XT, Wilderness, Limited XT, or Touring XT gives you a turbocharged 2.4-liter variant with 260 horsepower. Both engines are backed by a continuously variable transmission for smoother performance and greater efficiency. Drivers can expect up to an impressive EPA-estimated 33 mpg on the highway.

A 4-wheel independent suspension setup gives the Subaru Outback its car-like handling. Traction-enhancing features like Active Torque Vectoring and Vehicle Dynamics Control help drivers stay in control under intense cornering. Hill Descent Control helps the Outback maintain its set speed on downhill slopes for better vehicle control.

Key Features

Outback Wilderness

New for 2022 is the Subaru Outback Wilderness, a unique trim that takes the wagon’s rugged aesthetic to the next level. Higher ground clearance and redesigned front and rear bumpers with anodized copper-finish accents immediately set the Wilderness apart from other Outback trims. The redesigned roof rails also feature the same copper accents, along with the ability to support a rooftop tent. Inside, the Wilderness features unique water-repellent upholstery. Even the drivetrain is retuned to accommodate low-speed climbing, giving the Wilderness the ability to traverse grades up to 40 percent.

Advanced Safety Features

The Outback features a plethora of advanced safety and driver-assist technologies. EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology monitors traffic up ahead, provides adaptive cruise control, and even warns drivers of unintentional lane drift. The DriverFocus® Distraction Mitigation System watches for signs of drowsy and/or inattentive driving and provides helpful alerts when needed. The system even features customized settings for up to five different drivers. Other safety features include Blind-Spot Detection, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Automatic Pre-Collision Braking, and STARLINK Safety and Security.

X-Mode

Adding to the Subaru Outback’s off-road prowess is X-Mode. This feature works in conjunction with Outback’s symmetrical all-wheel drive system to deliver maximum traction under demanding off-road situations. An available “dual function” version gives you two modes for getting out of slippery situations: Snow/Dirt Mode and Deep Snow/Mud Mode. The latter gives you just enough wheelspin to keep from getting mired in deep mud or snow.
