2023 Subaru Ascent

Overview

The 2023 Subaru Ascent has plenty going for it. Not only is it the largest SUV in the lineup, but it’s also one of the most spacious with ample seating for up to 8 passengers and an impressive list of standard and optional features. With its decidedly wagon-like looks, capable AWD drivetrain, and impressive fuel economy relative to its size, the Ascent offers a refreshing departure from the ordinary SUV. For 2023, the Ascent comes in eight varieties ranging from a base model to the well-equipped Onyx Edition and Touring trims.

The Perfect Ride For…

Adventurous families in search of an equally adventurous ride. The Ascent’s rugged looks aren’t just for show. The Ascent’s tall ride height gives it 8.7 inches of ground clearance, which is handy on rough trails. The rugged body cladding adds to its looks and improves resistance against bumps and scrapes. Inside, the Ascent offers a civilized interior with up to 153.2 cubic feet of passenger volume. The 11.6-inch high-resolution touch screen lies at the heart of the Ascent’s STARLINK Multimedia system, giving you access to wireless Bluetooth, hands-free smartphone features, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Seating for 8 comes courtesy of a second-row bench seat, but buyers can also opt for a pair of second-row captain’s chairs despite a slight reduction in seating capacity. Features like an available power rear gate also make loading and unloading a breeze.

Drive and Handling

Subaru’s trademark Boxer engine powers every 2023 Subaru Ascent regardless of trim choice. The 2.4-liter turbocharged unit makes excellent power with 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque at your command. Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive gives drivers all the confidence they need to navigate harsh weather and driving conditions. In a nod to fuel efficiency and smoothness, the Ascent relies on a continuously variable automatic transmission to funnel power to all four wheels. The result is impressive fuel economy, with the base version achieving an EPA-estimated 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.

The 2023 Ascent also uses Subaru’s X-MODE to optimize available traction under slippery or snowy roads and terrain. You’ll also find the built-in Hill Descent Control system handy when going down steep, challenging grades. Higher trims come equipped with an upgraded Dual-Function X-MODE that also includes individual settings for Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud. These settings give you finer control over the 2023 Ascent’s trailblazing capabilities.

Key Features

Safety

The Subaru Ascent gets plenty of safety and driver-assist upgrades for 2023. These include standard EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, which uses several advanced active safety systems to prevent or mitigate collisions. The DriverFocus® Distraction Mitigation System constantly watches for signs of drowsy or inattentive driving, giving drivers an audible and visual heads-up when attention wanes. Automatic Emergency Steering also comes available for 2023, allowing drivers to avoid potential accidents with a combination of automatic steering and braking support. Other features include Blind-Spot Detection, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and available Reverse Automatic Braking.

Towing Capacity

The 2023 Subaru Ascent makes it easy to take advantage of its substantial towing capacity. All trims save for the Base offer up to 5,000 pounds of trailer towing capability when you add an available Class III trailer hitch. You’ll also find an impressive assortment of roof rack accessories that further enhance the Ascent’s cargo-carrying capabilities.

Alternative Options

The Ascent is the largest model in the Subaru lineup, but we have plenty of other new models available to fit your unique needs. If you want the same versatility in a smaller size, try out the Subaru Crosstrek, which is an incredibly capable compact crossover. If you’re more of a sedan driver, you may prefer the sporty Subaru WRX, which offers the same confidence-inspiring all-wheel drive in a performance-based sedan.
