Fast Forward: Subaru STI Performance Concept Heralds Tuning Wing's US Expansion
If the recent unveiling of the STI Performance Concept at the 2015 New York International Auto Show is any indication of the future, then it would appear Subaru has big plans for the U.S. market—especially as it relates to Subaru Tecnica International (STI).
STI, the performance division of Subaru, has long-supplied highly tuned versions of existing models. The most famous of which is the WRX STI. With the debut of the STI Performance Concept, however, Subaru hopes to bolster STI’s presence in the U.S. in three core business areas—aftermarket parts, STI-tuned cars, and motorsports.
According to Subaru, this expansion has already begun. Subaru is in the midst of replacing Subaru Performance Tuning (STP) aftermarket parts in the U.S., as well as increasing STI’s engineering presence in Subaru of America’s Global RallyCross team.
Perhaps even more exciting to lead-footed Subaru fans here in the U.S, however, is Subaru’s plan to introduce even more models tuned by STI. Naturally, these specialized versions would feature even more extensive modifications than previously offered. We’re talking the whole enchilada; suspension, braking, chassis, and aerodynamic upgrades.
That said, the BRZ-based STI Performance Concept recently on display in New York isn’t on its way just yet. Rather, it’s intended to showcase the engineering prowess and tuning capability of STI, and does so by incorporating the racing engine developed by STI for the BRZ Super GT racecar, suspension and chassis components, and aerodynamic upgrades.
While we’re left to chart our own course and imagine what this STI-filled future will look like exactly, the STI Performance Concept is – at the very least – a sneak peek into that very exciting, and very fast, future.
