Subaru VIZIV Future Concept: Next-Gen Forester or Something Else?
Here at Herb Gordon Subaru we’re big fans of the concept car. Not only are they fun to look at, they often provide a good look into the future of an automaker’s lineup. At the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, Subaru showed off a number of concepts, but none were as impressive, and perhaps important, as the VIZIV Future Concept.
The VIZIV, whose name derives from “vision for innovation,” is a crossover SUV concept. Unlike some concept cars, which don’t always feature working parts, the VIZIV sports a revised version of Subaru’s 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. According to Subaru, the engine’s size, light weight, and net thermal efficiency are all improved, while particular attention has been made to increase efficiency and preserve driving enjoyment.
As the VIZIV is a hybrid, its 2.0-liter engine is joined by Subaru’s next generation hybrid system, which can already be found in the XV Crosstrek Hybrid.
At this point, official figures in terms of efficiency and mileage are unavailable, but according to reports, Subaru claims advancements “in every aspect of the system.”
Engine performance isn’t the only aspect to preview technological advancements, though. The VIZIV boasts expanded EyeSight capabilities. By merging existing EyeSight camera technology with all-direction radar, high-accuracy GPS and map systems, as well as advanced telematics and human-machine interface (HMI), Subaru is hoping to achieve even greater success in terms of driver and passenger safety.
It’s still too early to say, but this enhanced version of EyeSight could very well lay the foundations for what could eventually become a new automatic driving experience that is designed to anticipate and react to danger before a driver can (or needs to).
While we don’t know if or when the VIZIV will ever make it to production, it’s clear Subaru envisions a more technologically focused future, one where its vehicles retain their signature capability while being outfitted with even more safety features and advanced powertrains.
