We’re constantly trying to progress and reach goals. From healthier habits to money saving to advancing our careers, it seems like we’re all in a constant state of motion. But what happens when we are just going through the motions and don’t feel as though we’re reaching our goals? If you need a few ways to improve your routine so that you can make progress again, try some of these tips:
Take time to organize your day
A to-do list can be a helpful tool or a chaotic mess. When it just grows and grows, it can become stifling. At the beginning and end of each day, take time to organize your to-do list. In the morning, prioritize the most important tasks. Create a secondary list for small tasks that you can do quickly, in case you want to fill the pockets of time in your day while shrinking your task list. At the end of the day, organize it again, marking off what you did and setting yourself up for the next day.
Work on something for one hour a day
There are things we must do every single day. Work, chores, child care, meals, sleep, etc. Often, we don’t have the energy to focus on the projects we care about the most, especially if they feel large and time-consuming. Dedicate one hour each day to your most important goal, outside of your required daily tasks. Whether you want to work on a hobby, spend more quality time with your family, or read a book. Set aside an hour every day for what you want most. After all, there are 23 hours left for all those things you must do.
Get enough sleep, water, and nutritious food
It’s easier said than done, but it’s much easier to reach your goals when you aren’t battling constant fatigue. Fueling your day with nutrient-dense food will keep you alert and improve your mood and brain function throughout the day. Don’t discount the impact of proper hydration. Keeping a water bottle with you throughout the day can help you stay hydrated. For sleep, choose a time you can go to bed reasonably, and get at least seven hours of sleep. Your body and mind will thank you.
Take regular breaks
If you regularly experience burnout, headaches, and trouble focusing, ask yourself when you last took a break. Humans can focus for an average of 90 minutes before needing a 15-minute break. Set a timer and even if you’re in the middle of something, take a few minutes to walk around, drink some water, have a snack, and clear your head. When you come back to your task, you’ll be able to dedicate more brain power to what you’re doing.
Get daily movement
This doesn’t have to mean going to the gym—unless you want it to. Moving your body and getting some exercise will improve your mental and physical health. Aim for 30 to 60 minutes a day. Even if you’re just going for a walk, doing yoga, or playing with your dog, the benefits of exercise will pay dividends when it comes to reduced stress.
Control your media consumption
This doesn’t just mean limiting screen time. If you cultivate your social media feeds to align with your goals, they can become a positive tool for your growth. Follow people that teach, inspire, and motivate you toward where you’re going. That way, when you inevitably open your social media during a break, you’re reminded of your goals in a positive way.
Review your big-picture goals often
Whether you look at them once a day, once a week, or once a month, it’s good to review your big-picture goals. Reminding yourself of what you’re working towards can give you more meaning in your day-to-day life. You can also assess if your current actions are moving you closer to those goals, or further away from them.
